The 14 Zi Wei Major Stars as MBTI Types
The temperament of each Life Palace star, translated into sixteen-type language
Why the mapping works — and why it is not an equation
Zi Wei Dou Shu sketches a person's base temperament from the major star seated in the Life Palace; MBTI-style typing describes cognitive preferences on four axes; the Enneagram names nine core motivations. All three systems answer the same question — "in what manner does this person live?" — which is why they translate into each other so naturally. The mapping is useful in both directions: a reader fluent in MBTI can enter the star vocabulary through it, and a chart reader can explain a star to friends in one familiar word.
But the systems measure different layers. MBTI and Enneagram results come from self-report questionnaires — they capture how you see yourself now, and they drift with age and circumstance. A birth chart is fixed by the birth moment and describes an innate configuration. So the pairings below are common temperament correspondences, not one-to-one identities: people with the same major star genuinely test as different types, and brightness (庙旺利陷), companion stars, the palace triangle and the four transformations all rewrite how a star expresses itself. Treat the mapping as a signpost, never a verdict.
This crossover is this site's own cultural reading. It is not affiliated with the official MBTI® organizations; type names are used descriptively.
The leadership stars: Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wu Qu, Tian Xiang, Lian Zhen
Zi Wei (紫微) → ENTJ / INTJ (Enneagram 8 the Challenger, 3 the Achiever). The Emperor's goal-drive and command of the whole board is the commander archetype — setting direction, writing rules, wanting a capable staff. With the "hundred officials" in attendance it reads ENTJ; the unsupported "lone sovereign" leans INTJ, planning alone.
Tian Fu (天府) → ISFJ / ESFJ (Enneagram 9 the Peacemaker, 6 the Loyalist). The treasury star is steady, containing, a keeper of what already works — grow the granary before the empire. Its care for margins and guarantees carries a 6-ish vigilance.
Wu Qu (武曲) → ESTJ / ISTJ (Enneagram 1 the Reformer, 8 the Challenger). Steel-willed pragmatism standing on discipline and execution — the executive profile. The devotion to standards is 1; the unbending follow-through is 8.
Tian Xiang (天相) → ISFJ / ENFJ (Enneagram 1 the Reformer, 2 the Helper). The seal star holds the scales even and delights in enabling others — beyond its famous good taste, what it truly honors is fairness. Principle reads 1; the warmth of making others succeed reads 2.
Lian Zhen (廉贞) → ENTP / ESTP (Enneagram 3 the Achiever, 7 the Enthusiast). Ambition braided with social craft — adaptable, persuasive, willing to gamble; a debater crossed with a player. The goal-chasing is 3; the appetite for novelty is 7.
The pioneer stars: Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tan Lang
Qi Sha (七杀) → ISTP / ESTP (Enneagram 8 the Challenger, 6 the Loyalist). The general star's decisive severity — a lone-wolf doer who acts first and explains later, steadier the higher the pressure. The force is 8; the threat-radar is the vigilant face of 6.
Po Jun (破军) → ENTP / ENFP (Enneagram 8 the Challenger, 7 the Enthusiast). The vanguard star breaks in order to rebuild — spending the old to open the new, a born reformer of systems. Colliding with existing order is 8; the hunger for new territory is 7.
Tan Lang (贪狼) → ENFP / ESFP (Enneagram 7 the Enthusiast, 3 the Achiever). The desire star's many talents and social spark — often the room's atmosphere in person form. A textbook 7 with a performing 3 streak.
The support stars: Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong, Tian Liang
Tian Ji (天机) → INTP / ENTP (Enneagram 5 the Investigator, 7 the Enthusiast). The strategist star loves moving parts and inference — think it through first, act second, and dread having nothing to figure out. The studiousness is 5; the ceaseless ideas are 7.
Tai Yin (太阴) → INFP / INFJ (Enneagram 4 the Individualist, 9 the Peacemaker). Moonlight turned inward — fine-grained feeling, long memory, the deep water of the chart. The insistence on the texture of experience is 4; the longing for quiet is 9.
Tian Tong (天同) → INFP / ISFP (Enneagram 9 the Peacemaker, 2 the Helper). The blessing star's easygoing temper and taste for beauty — feeling first, competing last; enjoying life is itself the talent. The contentment is 9; the soft caretaking is 2.
Tian Liang (天梁) → INFJ / ISTJ (Enneagram 1 the Reformer, 9 the Peacemaker). The elder star — seasoned, high-minded, guardian and inspector by nature; an elder born early, worrying about right and wrong while sheltering the young. The conscience is 1; the detachment is 9.
The expression stars, and the empty Life Palace
Tai Yang (太阳) → ENFJ / ESFJ (Enneagram 2 the Helper, 3 the Achiever). Radiant, outward warmth that takes lighting others as its job — protagonist energy that wants to shine, and wants the shine to land on someone. The giving is 2; the striving is 3.
Ju Men (巨门) → INTP / ISTP (Enneagram 6 the Loyalist, 5 the Investigator). The dark star's sharp tongue rests on a doubt-first habit — the eloquence is surface; the refusal to take things on faith is the engine. The wariness is 6; the root-cause digging is 5.
The empty Life Palace (命无正曜) → INFP / ENFP (Enneagram 9 the Peacemaker, 4 the Individualist). No major star sits in the Life Palace, which borrows the triangle's stars instead — mirror-like, context-strong, growing sharper against sharper company. The blending is 9; the inward question "who am I, really?" is 4.
How to use the mapping
Three uses. Verification: cast your chart, then set your tested MBTI or Enneagram type beside your Life Palace star — where they agree, the innate and the self-reported are in tune; where they clash is usually the most interesting place to dig, because either circumstance has been suppressing the star, or the star has not yet been seen by its owner. Translation: explaining "Qi Sha in the Life Palace" to a friend who knows no astrology, "roughly the ISTP lone-wolf type" beats half an hour of theory. Entry: if you know your type first, read backwards to the stars that resemble you, then cast a free chart to see whether your Life Palace actually holds them.
The boundary, once more: the major star is only the first stroke of a chart. Brightness, companion stars, the triangle and the four transformations all rewrite the expression. The mapping ends at "similar temperament" — judgment belongs to the full chart.
