Tian Ji (天机)

The Strategist · Yin Wood · goodness

What the star is

Tian Ji (天机) is Yin Wood, and its transformed quality is goodness. The classics call it the star of counsel — the adviser in the general's tent. It governs thinking, planning and change, and of the fourteen major stars it is the one whose mind moves fastest.

Yin Wood is the flexible wood of vines and grasses rather than the timber of a beam, so Tian Ji's intelligence is agile and adaptive rather than weighty and decisive. In strong placements that agility reads as foresight; weak, or met by harsh stars, it tips into overthinking and indecision.

Temperament

People with Tian Ji in the Life Palace are usually curious, quick to learn and quick to notice what is new. They like analysing a problem and are good at suggesting a way through it. The pace tends to be restless — plans get revised, and changes of job or setting are common across a life.

The tendency worth watching: more thinking than doing, and a mind that does not switch off easily at night. Cleverness without a settled foundation can end up working against its owner.

Career and wealth

The fit is work won by intelligence: planning and strategy, analysis, research and engineering, consulting, teaching and media. Tian Ji often does better in the second chair than the first — as the chief of staff rather than the commander, where its strengths count and its hesitations cost less.

Money here is best earned through expertise rather than speculation. When Lu Cun or the Hua Lu transformation meets the palace, earning through a craft or a specialism runs smoothly.

Relationships

In relationships Tian Ji is attentive and perceptive, quick to understand what a partner means — and also prone to second-guessing and mood swings. Its pairings with Tai Yin (太阴), Ju Men (巨门) and Tian Liang (天梁) produce very different pictures of marriage, so this is a star that has to be read against the whole chart.
