What it is

Shang Guan (伤官) is what the Day Master produces at opposite polarity — Ding fire from a Jia wood Day Master. Production across polarities is unreserved: the talent pours out and needs to be seen. Hence the name, which literally says it injures the Officer — its edge runs straight at the rules and authority that Zheng Guan represents.

It carries the highest concentration of ability among the Ten Gods and is also the most dependent on configuration. Shang Guan with Resource restraining it is read as distinction, talent governed into knowledge. Shang Guan generating Wealth is read as prosperity, creativity converted. Shang Guan meeting Officer with nothing to mediate is the classic unfavourable combination — friction, disputes, trouble with authority.

Temperament

Quick, articulate and visibly bright, with strong drives to express and to be seen. Thinking tends to jump, authority tends to get questioned, and taste and creative capacity are usually apparent at a glance.

The tendency to watch: talent worn openly can shade into disdain, and words land harder than intended. Emotional weather is changeable, slights are felt keenly, and friction with hierarchy is generally a lifelong subject rather than a phase.

Career and wealth

The fit is with work that lives on that edge: writing and design, performance and media, marketing and strategy, technical innovation, advocacy. Environments with room to move suit it far better than steeply layered institutions.

The wealth ceiling comes down to whether Shang Guan actually generates Wealth — talent aimed at a market earns both name and return, while talent displayed without landing anywhere tends towards the familiar complaint of gifts unrecognised.

Relationships

Traditionally Shang Guan is described in a woman's chart as difficult for a husband. What the older phrasing is pointing at is that its edge is hard on a partner's self-regard; Resource mediating it, or simply marrying later, is the classical answer. Strong Shang Guan usually wants admiration and freshness in love, and finds merely stable hard to stay fed by.
