Tan Lang (贪狼)

What the star is

Tan Lang (贪狼) is Yang Wood with a watery undertone, belonging to the Northern Dipper, and its transformed quality is peach blossom. Among the fourteen it is the star of desire and the star of talent at once: appetite for knowledge, for things and for intimacy all run high. The classics say it "governs fortune and misfortune", which is the older way of saying that one drive builds you or consumes you depending on where you point it.

Its best-known configurations are Huo Tan (火贪) and Ling Tan (铃贪) — Tan Lang meeting Huo Xing or Ling Xing. Both read as sudden, breakout opportunity and windfall. What arrives quickly still has to be held, though, so the pattern comes with its own caution against getting carried away.

Temperament

Wide-ranging interests and real facility across them; social skill is usually the standout trait, and picking up a new field quickly is characteristic. Vitality runs high, and so does willingness to ask for what is wanted.

The other side of the same appetite is difficulty choosing what to drop. Breadth becomes an asset when something anchors it and a scattering when nothing does.

Career and wealth

The fit is with work that runs on relationships and craft: business development, entertainment and media, public relations and marketing, hospitality. Emerging and unconventional industries also show a lot of Tan Lang.

Where a breakout pattern forms, income can arrive in bursts rather than a line. That argues for building something durable during the bursts rather than assuming their cadence continues.

Relationships

As the peach-blossom star, opportunity and attention tend to be plentiful and the romantic temperature runs warm. When Xian Chi, Tian Yao or Hong Luan also meet the palace, self-direction matters more. The mature expression of Tan Lang is the one where that sociability converts into a network and a body of work rather than into churn.
